On May 29, 2026, students of the LMU certificate program "el mundo – Education for Sustainable Development in Teacher Education" joined members of the el mundo team for an excursion to Lake Ammersee as part of Module 5. The excursion focused on the concept of place-based learning, in which learning takes place directly at real-world locations, linking concrete experiences with educational and didactic questions.
The first stop was the Wartaweil Outdoor Education Center on the shores of Lake Ammersee. Participants gained insights into the institution’s educational work, which is characterized by a strong focus on inclusion and collaborative learning. The visit highlighted the potential of extracurricular learning environments for fostering diverse and inclusive educational experiences.
The group then visited the Carl Orff Museum in Dießen am Ammersee. Here, participants explored how cultural and music education can promote creativity, imagination, and participation. Engaging with Carl Orff’s educational legacy opened up new perspectives on creative and inclusive learning processes.
Another highlight of the excursion was the Burgwald Educational Trail. Its thoughtfully designed information stations provided valuable inspiration for creating outdoor learning experiences. Participants reflected on how educational content can be communicated effectively and engagingly beyond the traditional classroom setting.
The excursion vividly demonstrated the potential of place-based learning for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). By combining academic input, practical experiences, and collaborative reflection, students gained valuable ideas and inspiration for their future work as teachers. The day concluded with swimming, a barbecue, and boating on Lake Ammersee, providing opportunities for exchange, networking, and further reflection on the experiences of the day.
